TRINITY SERMON BY DERWIN GRAY

DERWIN GRAY'S TRINITY DOCTRINE SERMON

My church has a Sunday school class studying a book by Derwin Gray entitled “Advent.” All I had to read was the promo, “What kind of God would come to earth as a human.” I knew this was a false teacher because Jesus denied he is Jehovah in John 10:30-36. It seems like in today’s world, a Bible study is reading a book to fully understand what the Bible does not mention or explain properly. In some cases, like this one, the author actually uses his book to twist scripture to his own theoretical belief (The Catholic Trinity Doctrine). Therefore, I thought I’d look up Derwin Gray on YouTube.

I found a sermon by Derwin Gray on YouTube. I was hoping I might hear something new about the Trinity, because I think I have heard it all in studying this subject for about 15 years. Instead, I saw firsthand that this pastor was a typical pastor indoctinated in a 4th century theory. A theory created by Catholic bishops in 381 AD, who debated the issue for 56 years before final edit and approval! A theory not mention or described in all the Bible. You can’t make this stuff up.

Gray’s sermon started out by asking “Did Jesus ever say he was God; or is that an invention of the early church for us to believe? This is one of the most important questions we will ever ask ourselves.”
He made this statement at 3:15 into his sermon. I was anxious to hear his answer because I know Jesus even denied he is God in John 10:30-36. Gray then says he is not going to “intellectualize” this, but spends the rest of his sermon doing just that! In other words, his sermon explains why he thinks Jesus is Jehovah and why Jesus is one of three equals who make up Jehovah. There are 31,102 verses in the Bible, and he evidently knows there is no scriptures that state Jehovah is three in one, Jesus is God, or that one must believe Jesus is part of a triune God to be saved. Since the Catholic Trinity Doctrine depends on intellectualizing several misinterpreted scriptures, he naturally quoted a few of them.

Some of the scriptures Gray quoted are:
1. Joh 8:57-58 NIV "You are not yet fifty years old," they said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" "Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" Gray doesn’t point out that:
a. Jesus was only responding to a question about his age and seeing Abraham. (PS: Even Satan saw Abraham, and he is not God either.) The Pharisees were NOT asking Jesus who he was.
b. “I am” is not in caps, as it is in Exodus when God speaks. Gray apparently did not notice that because of his indoctrination. (Even pro-trinity translators know Jesus is not saying he is Jehovah.) Gray does mention LORD (Jehovah) is all caps, but does not mention Jesus is only shown as Lord, with only the L capitalized. Nevertheless, as Gray never mentions, lower case was not introduced until the 14th century!
c. Gray also does not mention that 3 other people in the Bible had the same “I am” 2 word answer. They were not claiming to be God either.
d. Jesus could not be claiming he is God because just 2 chapters later, in John 10:30-36, Jesus denies he is God to the Pharisees who falsely accuse him of claiming he is God. Jesus then calls them blasphemers (KJV) because it is his Father (Jehovah) who sanctified and sent him, and he is his son, “the Son of God.”

2. Gray calls Jesus the “Mighty One,” but doesn’t seem to know Jesus actually will sit at the right hand of the “Might One”(NIV). Jesus is never called the “Mighty One” in either the NIV or the KJV. Instead, we see Jesus sitting at the right of the Mighty One.
Mar 14:61-62 NIV..... But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" "I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the MIGHTY ONE and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Yes, Jesus is the Messiah and the one who sits to the right of his Father, Jehovah.
Additionally, I will point out Gray mentions the hackneyed belief that Jesus is God because he can forgive sins. Gray should know Jesus can only forgive sins because he was given that authority from the Mighty One:
• Mar 2:10 NIV..... But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins."
• Joh 5:26-27 NIV...... For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
Finally, I will pointy out Gray mentions the Lord’s Prayer several times, but doesn’t seem to notice the significance that the prayer is addressed to only the Father (only 1 of 3). That is because Jesus tells us in:
Joh 16:23 NIV In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Notice we not only pray to the Father, but Jesus tells us the Father is the one that gives! Hmm...... Is Jesus Jehovah, or is he Jehovah’s Son????? Who do you say Jesus is; God who came to earth, or the one God sent? The concept is very simple and biblical; believe who Jesus said he is, not who others think he is! My primary objective here is to critique Gray’s false teaching and not to give a detailed lesson on the Catholic Trinity Doctrine. However, you can read other lessons on this website to learn more about the Catholic Trinity Doctrine and its history than you ever thought you would know.
